Content Producer? Practice Vulnerability Like Your Life Depends On It [VIDEO]

From the first moments I met George Bryant of Civilized Caveman before his video interview I felt completely disarmed. In less than five minutes we were discussing PTSD in the military and eating disorders. George skips the small talk and dives right in. As a communication major in college, we framed this in terms of social penetration theory. Imagine an onion, and each layer gets peeled away as each person reveals something. Usually this starts with basics like "What do you do for a living?" and "Where are you from?" and eventually moves into deeper stuff like values and beliefs.

"Through self-disclosure, relationships development follows particular trajectory, moving from superficial layers of exchanges to more intimate ones." -Altman, I. & Taylor, D. (1973).

Here was someone who practices what he preaches. In his Digital Strategist role, George helps companies get in touch with their audiences through authenticity and vulnerability (we are both Brené Brown fans). In short, you can't encourage someone to take action unless you are showing up fully.

"I don't have the right to try to get somebody to buy something, do something or engage with something in their life if they're are not hearing the full story or getting the full picture of me." -George Bryant, Civilized Caveman

As an introvert and content producer I sometimes find it difficult to open up and show the "man behind the camera." My communication style leans towards overly-intellectual and reserved, so learning to show up fully has helped me grow in my relationships both online and in-person. For anyone producing content today, it takes vulnerability to break out of "sales speak" and empty content marketing, but as George illustrates, it's absolutely necessary to expand and deepen your reach online and off.
